 this is the episode where we learn that, for all his rigid loyalty and cold angelicness and “show me some respect or I’ll toss you back to the demons” talk, Cas actually sympathizes with Dean. he feels for Dean, after living his entire existence believing he isn’t supposed to feel anything at all, and it’s this that begins his fall from grace and his gradual shift towards humanity, all for Dean and because of Dean and what Dean feels and teaches him to feel. it all starts when they meet in that barn, in that tiny moment when Cas reads into Dean like an open book after Dean’s been keeping himself under lock and key his whole life, and it’s here, where Dean has to watch his mother make the deal that will kill her, that Cas starts to open up a little for Dean in return. this tosses them both tumbling messily and bloodily down a course to destroy destiny and all Cas has ever known, all for a brief, tiny moment where Dean feels and Cas feels with him, a small spark of empathy he shouldn’t have felt at all, and if that isn’t miraculous, then I don’t know what is.
